TL;DR

identity_mapping? in Gitlab::StringRangeMarker treats a syntax-highlighted line as a one-to-one copy of the raw line whenever the two strings have the same length. An already-safe highlighted line can contain markup of that same length, so a highlight range is written inside a tag and becomes an HTML attribute. A signed-in user can place that markup in a repository and run script in another user's browser when the highlighted file is viewed. The fix treats a line as a one-to-one mapping only when it also contains no markup characters.

Who does this affect?

You are affected if you are using a version that falls within the vulnerable range and users view syntax-highlighted repository files.
