TL;DR

Wasmtime's Cranelift backend fails to reload accumulated fuel after a call_ref call or when control returns along a try_table catch path, dropping fuel usage incurred inside the callee. A guest using fuel metering with the call_ref or try_table opcodes can run for exponential time on linear fuel, defeating timeout and periodic yield enforcement. The fix reloads the fuel counter after call_ref calls and at catch block entry so consumed fuel is always accounted.

Who does this affect?

You are affected if you are using a version that falls within the vulnerable range and you enable fuel based metering (Config::consume_fuel) for guests using the call_ref or try_table Wasm opcodes.

Background info

wasmtime is vulnerable to Denial of Service (DoS) in versions 47.0.0 - 48.0.2 and 49.0.0 - 49.0.0.

How to fix this

Upgrade the wasmtime library to the patch version.
